The New York Times reported today that Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, was asked to step down on Friday by President Obama after a series of meetings over the past two weeks. Hagel was the sole Republican on the President’s national security team which is under fire from critics on numerous issues, the main one: ISIS.
White House officials described the President’s decision to remove Hagel as “a recognition that the threat from the Islamic State would require a different kind of skills than Mr. Hagel was brought on to employ.”
Hagel’s aides had maintained for the past few weeks that Secretary Hagel would remain on Obama’s security team for the final years of his presidency.
The Resignation is expected to be announced today by the president in a Rose Garden appearance.
